Expectation is the quiet violence of becoming what others need you to be.
When Nirvana released Smells Like Teen Spirit in the fall of 1991, it did not simply enter the cultural conversation, it detonated it. Overnight, Kurt Cobain became the reluctant voice of an entire generation’s disillusionment: Generation X, raised in the long shadow of Reagan-era optimism, MTV consumerism, and a social contract that had already begun to fray. The song’s genius was its contradiction, an anthem so catchy it became everything its author despised. Cobain famously loathed the celebrity that followed, describing the song as a Pixies imitation, uncomfortable with the weight the world placed on his words.
That weight is the subject of this painting.
Expectation as an emotion lives in the space between what is and what is demanded of us. It is anticipation loaded with pressure, the emotional experience of carrying someone else’s vision of who you are supposed to be. The lyrics of Smells Like Teen Spirit, while deliberately abstract and even Cobain-described as “nonsensical,” paradoxically gave a generation the language for their alienation. “Here we are now, entertain us” — a line at once sardonic and desperate, captures the impossible position Cobain occupied: summoned by the crowd, hollowed by the summoning.
The symbols embedded in the rock-like formations of this work transcribe fragments of those lyrics not as celebration, but as artifact; a message etched in stone by someone who saw too clearly and was consumed by what he saw. Like the other musicians in this series, Cobain did not survive the gap between who he was and who the world expected him to be. His death in April 1994, at 27, stands as the series’ most explicit meditation on this theme: what happens when expectation exceeds a person’s capacity to carry it.
To the viewer, this piece asks: Whose expectations are you living inside? And at what cost?
